War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., (with small 12mo. slip concerning sending his image home) written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp of the 126th N. Y. V., Centreville, Va., Mar. 25, 1863", in part: "…our first lieut. is acting as Capt. and in all probability will be captain…I think him to be the best officer in the Regt…as a man and gentleman he is the best…he is young, stylish and good looking and as clever and generous as he handsome. I have been on picket in the reserve with him…whatever he has is…as much…the boys as it is his. If they refuse to eat with him he compels them to do so. He comes down to the hog-pen occasionally to sing songs and tell stories. You may in future direct your letters in his care Capt. S. H. Platt. S. Blairsdell received a letter from his sister with a little seal with the inscription "if neglected. I die." Sandy (as we call him) happened to see it and nothing would do but…take it down to him and plague him about it for half an hour. We left Union Mills yesterday…the 1st Pennsylvania reserves came over with us…we had to lay right in the mud…it is generally reported that we are to take an active part in the summer campaign. There is…a very respectable little force here comprising the 39th, 111th, 125th and 126th N. Y. and the 1st Pa., two or three batteries and one or two Regts. of cavalry. The…country here is very pleasant but the village…has the same desolate appearance that Bolivar and Harpers Ferry wore. There is about twenty buildings. Most of them half torn down and…looking as though they were built before Noah's Ark was thought of…the enclosed is just as I appear every day when off duty. When I get one for E. M. I shall have it taken as I appear on dress parade "A la Militaire". I fear we shall not get any pay before May. If that proves to be the case I shall not be able to send it before then. G. S. Y. The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
