War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp of the 126th N. Y. V. Centreville, [Va.], Apr. 26, 1863", in part: "…we have not made another "change of base" as yet…other troops have been sent out to Warrenton and Culpeper…more are daily passing through Union MIlls by railroad. Another move to Richmond I suppose. Gen. Abercrombie has assumed the command of our division heretofore commanded by Gen. Casey. He has issued very strict orders in regard to picketing forbidding fires on the posts and prohibiting the men from leaving the post one at a time or even resting the butt of their guns on the ground while their trick is on. We have heretofore been in the habit of looking around a little when not standing a trick and doing about as we pleased generally…in regard to our Regt acting cowardly in action I think that they will stand as well as any Regt in the service. I know that Col. [Eliakim] Sherrill [KIA Gettysburg, 7/03/63] is as plunky as any officer in the United States…the boys will follow him wherever he leads. He had rather have a fight with the rebs today than to eat…what there is left of the boys will stand most all kinds of exposure…I have never reported myself on the sick list but two days…great things are indeed expected of Hooker and I hope they will be realized for…I am willing to take my part…that this "cruel war will be over"…George S.
