War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp of the 126th N. Y. V. Centreville, [Va.], May 11, 1863", in part: "…it is a beautiful morning bright pleasant and balmy…Hooker will have another chance to move indeed it was reported here yesterday that he had already crossed the Rapphannock…I hope the next move he makes will terminate with some decisive result for I am heartily sick of…men being slaughtered by ten of thousands without a victory for either side though the Rebels claim a victory in having compelled Gen. Hooker to recross the river. Among the list of wounded I notice the name of several friends some of whom I knew at home, but more that I have become acquainted with [since] joining the army…the 111th are still here and not likely to go to Washington…Col. [Eliakim] Sherrill refused to let us go there to do provost duty…Gus Aikens [Robert A. Aikins, deserted April 20, 1863] is considered a deserter and his brother [Capt. John F. Aikins] about as good though I have no cause of complaint. He always used me first rate. Fast day passed without our knowing it…G. S. Youngs. Dear mother, I hardly know what to say in reply to your letter but hope that you will have as little anxiety on my account as possible…I am afraid that you will not see me home in less than one year or two, but it is all for the best. Hoping this will find you and the rest…in good health…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
