War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp of the 126th N. Y. V. Centreville, [Va.], May 20, 1863", in part: "…several boys have been partially sun struck and fallen while on drill. Two or three fell one day last week while on brigade inspection which we are to have once a month. We have about got our camp hidden in evergreens…there is an arch over the line officers street and hanging from it a wreath with the figure 126 in the centre. Some of the Co. streets also have arches over them with the letter of the Co. and mottoes in evergreen. The camp looks very pleasant indeed. I am sorry the people had their celebration all for nothing. It seems as though they thought the taking of Richmond would end the Rebellion when…nothing can be further from the truth. It is true it would be quite a blow to them and one which will not be struck in sometime…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor soiling, else VG
