War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp of the 126th N. Y. V. Centreville, [Va.], June 12-15, 1863", in part: "…I have been over to a house about a quarter of a mile outside the lines. No one was there but three ladies and an old wench. The ladies say they like then Maine boys a great deal better than they do us. They say they don't mil their cows nor kill chickens as the New York boys do. One of them says why it don't seem to make any difference which side of a cow they get. They will sit right down and milk their canteens full and not spill a drop. I could hardly believe her…but somehow…we manage to have all the milm we want without paying for it and we are not the boys to let a pig or a chicken bit us. The lieut. in command of the section…says that we will all be snatched tonight. Gen. Abercrombie has been up and informed him that the rebels have crossed the river again and are at Drainsville…[Sunday June 14th 1863] I had the pleasure of seeing Major Gen. Howard and staff just arrived here from Hooker's army…he commands the 11th Army Corps at the battle of Chancellorsville which…distinguished itself (for running) in that memorable defeat. Gen. Howard isa fine looking man, wears a moustache and whiskers, has an eye like an eagle…his face expresses firmness and determination…one of his orderlies…told me that he (Howard) the bravest man he ever saw. Says he, I saw him at the battle of Chancellorsville take his reins in his teeth (he has but one arm) and snatch a stand of colors from one of the color bearers who was retreating and take it up on his horse and ask his men to follow him and they refused. He is still in command of that corps…they will be here tomorrow and…the 3rd and 1st also. You may look for stirring events in the next three months. Lee is said to be marching rapidly this way…[June 15th]…the 11th Corps is here and will…be some distance away by night…they move on today no one knows where…G. S. Youngs." Minor soiling, else
