Autograph Letter Signed, “Wm. W. Glenn” 4p. quarto, Freywaldun, K.K. Schlesien, November 14, 1850, with integral leaf addressed to J. Howard McHenry, of Paris, in part: “...How long I can still forward and receive letters through Prussia, I cannot say. Rumors are ripe here of a skirmish of advance guards in Hesse Casset in which fine Austrians ‘hit the dust’ and lasy tongues predict every day that in forty eight hours all communication will be cut off between the two countries. That there is some cause for this alarm, I judge from two reasons; first that Austrian paper money is sadly fallen in value within the last few days, from the anticipation that a government who for three years has had an income of four & a half million of dollars to meet eight million of current expenses cannot long pay up in case of another war; secondly, taht the coachmen here who used to drive us into Prussia, refuse now to go...Another sign, I was near forgetting; the boundry is so well guarded now, that the smugglers are getting rusty and I have to pay fifteen cents for my sugar instead of twelve & a half...” VG. Liberal hopes for German unification were not met during the politically turbulent 1848-49 period. A Prussian plan for a smaller union was dropped in late 1850 after Austria threatened Prussia with war.
