War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp Elk Run, Va., Aug. 21, 1863", in part: "…we left our camp…and joined the brigade at Elk run…myself and seven others…were immediately detailed for picket…we had a veer good time…had all the green corn and milk we wanted for the plantation of a Mr. Spilger. He has 200 acres…and has been raising large crops of wheat and corn…I am afraid he will not raise much more than enough for his own use. He has not the niggers to do even that now. The last he had, nine in number, left him night before last. The old man was nearly crazy the next morning. He was running all over groaning and grumbling wishing he had sent the niggers down south or put a ball through "that Simon" whom he blamed for the whole of i…he said that if his boys were…home he would not care…boys are in the rebel army…he is now left entirely alone with the exception of one old nigger who is too old to be of any use…myself and P. Mitchell milked for him and he will have to be dependent on the soldiers or his neighbors…the old man cant get any corn, but the soldiers can…we are…under marching orders with four days rations…the Rebel cavalry made a dash on our picket yesterday near where we had been camped…from the musketry it was quite a sharp skirmish…the conscription law may be all right but I cant see it…George S. Youngs". The original transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
