War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp Elk Run, Va., Sept. 4, 1863", in part: "…Brigadier Gen. Owen is now in command of the division during the absence of Gen. Hays…the gospel is the power of salvation…I did not think the chapel very smart…Blaisdell has not been sick…at least not so far as to go to the Dr. F. Smarthout [Pvt. Frank Swarthout, 111th New York] always speaks to me when he sees me. Sometimes I return it coldly and sometimes I do not hear him. We did not go…after the Rebel cavalry. Cavalry is always used for that purpose…our brigade went out to Hartwood Church last monday to support the cavalry in a reconnoissance up…the Rappahannock. They returned on Friday…G. S. Y."
