War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. (with small slip) 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Culpepper Va., Sept. 15, 1863, in part: "…we have not yet received any orders to march. We heard very heavy cannonading nearly all day…from much heavier guns than ordinary field pieces. The cavalry report that the Johnnies are strongly fortified on the other side of the Rapidan…one of the ladies of Culpepper was badly injured by one of our shells which burst in the town. These "contemptible yankees" have opened the railroad through to this place…our ears were greeted by the shrill whistle of the "iron horse" which was answered by a spontaneous cheer from the whole division. You don't know how home-like it sounds to hear the cars after being a stranger to the sound for a long time…the 7th Virginia have been attached to our brigade and the brigade is now called the 2nd…I wish you would make me a Corps Badge after the enclosed pattern. There is three divisions to every corps. First division red, 2nd white, 3rd blue. Each and everyone's obliged to wear one. They are furnished to the Government, but they are very coarse and as I have just drawn a new cap I want one to correspond with it. I would like to have it made of blue silk velvet, the edges bound with gold or silver tinsel or cord…our badge looks as much like the ace of cubs as anything else. It was for that reason Gen. Hays, at the battle of Gettysburg, said that "clubs is trumps and we hold both bowers" (the two highest cards) from your affectionate brother, George S. Youngs, 126th Regt. N. Y. S. V., 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
