War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp near the Rapidan, Va., Sept. 24, 1863," in part: "…John Tressler died in hospital at Washington…our Regt has received no conscripts yet and I hope it will receive none for as mush as I dislike the idea of consolidation I dislike them more. There is but eight companies in the Regt now companies B and K having been distributed among the other Cos…a great many of the boys will not get a cent this pay day and yet [they] owe the government four or five dollars for clothing. Nothing has been allowed us for the clothes lost at Harpers Ferry nor for that thrown away on the march to Gettysburg. A great deal of clothing was ordered to be thrown away by the Dr.s [doctors]. I shall endeavor if I am so fortunate to live another year to economize so as to have the government owe me as such as I did them…the Brigade band is playing at Head quarters as usual…I suppose it is hard for Nellie to be respectful to a soldier since she has such a preference for citizens. My best respects to her nevertheless I am afraid I know more about spades, clubs, Hearts and Diamonds than I ought to…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
