Pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp near Cedar Mountain, Va., Sept. 28, 1863," in part: "…the badge is excellent but I have taken the figure 3 off as its significance would not be…apparent. I have no doubt whatever that I shall be able to make it sit perfectly smooth…have you seen John G. Whittier's poem entitled Barbara Frietchie…George S. Youngs." The second, reads, in part: "…we came in last night from forty eight hours picketing …our Regt was on the left of our division, the post of honor [as] Col. [James M.] Bull called it. If being in close proximity to a large force of the Johnnies constituted it. The post of honor he was right. Our boys and they are on the best of term and exchange papers when they can do so without being seen by the officers. Yesterday Thomas Costello traded them some coffee for some tobacco…send me by mail Casey's Infantry Tactics regulation edition, three volumes $2.50…George S. Youngs 126th Regt. N. Y. S. V., 3rd Division, 2nd Corps." The original transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG. (Two letters)
