War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Cedar Mountain, Va., Oct. 4, 1863, in part: "…the brigade band is playing as usual but I had rather hear the choir in the old church…mother says she does not hear much martial music or band music now if she comes here for a week…she would hear enough…to last her for a year. There is three brass bands in the division. One to each brigade and a drum corps to each regiment besides the bugles…when duty does not require them to play they are practicing so that there is hardly an hour…one or the other of them is not heard. The 108th N. Y. is in the 2nd Brigade and we meet it very often…[Oct. 7]…I had intended to finish this…but was detailed for orderly to Gen. [Joshua] Owen…after marching about five miles we came in sight of the camp of the 5th Corps…we shall not remain here long. It is rumored that we shall go to Tennessee to reinforce Rosecrans…hoping to date my next at Charleston, S. C…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
