War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "On Picket, Oct. 1, 1863," in part: "…I have seen it stated in the papers that the army along the Rapidan had had no fires for two weeks for fear of being shelled by the enemy's batteries. I have not seen the time yet that we could not have fires, even out on the picket line…at Centreville, when there was no enemy in fifty miles…all fires on the picket line were strictly prohibited, but here where we are within thirty or forty yards…we have all the fire we desire…I suppose they are…waiting for the weather to be so cold as to render a fire absolutely necessary to issue an order prohibiting it. That is the way they generally do business…I shall make no more prophessies for Old Meade don't seem to confide his plans to me anymore…it is a big thing for them to…go way down to the front and lay a bridge under the protection of both infantry and artillery…our cavalry drove the Rebel pickets about fifty yard again night before last and we are now closer than ever but all intercourse is now strictly prohibited by an order from division headquarters which was read by the adjutant as soon as the regt. was formed this afternoon. I have merely dated my letter from "On Picket" as you will know we are only two or three miles from camp…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
