War-date Union soldier's letter, 5 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Near the Rappahannock, Oct. 11, 1863," in part: "…we got orders to draw clothing and five days rations…and be ready to move at a moments warning…about 9…the next morning we started for the front. We did not take the course we did in going out…but went farther to the right…we formed a line of battle and the Col. said we should…have a fight…we heard some cannonading…to the left, but not enough to amount to much. This morning we were routed up at two…told to make coffee and be ready to march at three…we were ordered to have very small fires only…as was absolutely necessary to make coffee…we were formed in line and stood there in the cold until nearly daylight. Just before dawn our brigade was put in motion…it was a quick motion…kept up for nearly five miles without a halt…our first division is now crossing the river and we will do the same in a few moments. The whole army…is here waiting to cross. Trains of cars loaded with Government stores etc are crossing every moment. The wagon trains are crossing on a bridge below. On the whole it looks very much like a "skedaddle"…the bugle sounded "fall in" and fifteen minutes later we crossed the Rappahannock. We are now about five miles from the river…Lee has sent a large force down the Shenandoah Valley and that we are going down toward Harpers Ferry to intercept or meet him…we shall have another serious march if Lee attempts to cross the Potomac…I do not know whether James M. Bull is Col. or not. He may hold the commission but the regt is not strong enough to enable him to be mustered. [In fact, he was, being appointed colonel July 3, 1863 vice Col. Eliakim Sherrill KIA Gettysburg.] Brigadier Gen. Alexander Hays commands the third Division. Brigadier Gen. Gen. Owen commands the third Brigade…Major Gen. J. H. Warren commands the Second Corps…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
