War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Bristow Station, Oct. 19, 1863, in part: "…we are going back toward the Rappahannock…we are laying in line of battle within a half mile of where we had the fight on the 14th. There is a train of cars as far up…here already with material for repairing the road. All the damage done the road up to this point was the burning of one small bridge which has been already repaired but beyond here the road is all torn up and badly damaged. Our dead which was left on the field have not yet been buried. Details have been made for the purpose and are now engaged in the execution of the work. They have taken all the wounded that could be moved back with them. That is all we did not take with us. As I write the cannon are blowing way…to our right [at] the cavalry I presume. We left our camp near Mitchell's Ford at daylight…part of Gen. Meade's army has been sent to Gen. Rosecrans…the Eleventh and Twelfth Corps are now in Tennessee and there are now but five corps in the Army of the Potomac namely the 1st, 2nd, 3rd 5th and 6th…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
