Book, REPORT ON THE ART OF WAR IN EUROPE IN 1854, 1855, AND 1856, by Colonel R. Delafield, approximately 400 pages, quarto, 1861, George W. Bowman, Washington, D.C. The title page indicates that this massive work was produced "under the orders of the Hon. Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War" and presented to the 2nd Session of the 36th Congress. The first half of the book is heavily illustrated text that contains the author's field observations of the English, Turkish, Russian, and Austro-Hungarian armies. This is followed by a section of large fold-out maps, diagrams, and charts augmenting the written information. The final eighteen plates consist of full page engravings depicting Sebastapol, some of which are colored. A remarkable piece of intelligence gathering, the lessons of which were doubtlessly studied by Civil War strategists. Missing spine, somewhat loose binding, and wear to the covers. Overall Good condition.
