War-date Union soldier's letter, 5 1/3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Warrenton, Va., Nov. 5, 1863, in part: "…James M. Bull has been mustered as Col. and now wears the glittering eagle…major Phillips has resigned…John Stewart was wounded on the 14th. He was carried to the rear and put in an ambulance by four of our boys. Lieut. [Martin] Stanton [WIA Morton's Ford, Va., 2/06/64; Wilderness, 5/6/64 & MWIA Petersburg 6/16/64] received notice of his death from someone connected with the ambulance Corps…I do not know whether he lived to reach Alexandria or not…the probability is he was buried somewhere between that place and Bristow Station. The honorable Mr. Howard talks very loyal. If some of those loyal office seekers would come down here…they might get the blood of one of those Rebels on their shirts…to give you an idea of what the…Regt thinks of the Copperheads I will repeat a conversation…which occurred last night…they had been speaks of the recent elections…say No. 1, The lowest, meanest, most degraded man in the U. S. could not invent a name mean enough for…the C-H. No. 2, No nor he couldn't wish a wish bed enough for them. No. 1, The D-L himself couldn't heat a fire hot enough 'em. This is the general sentiment here tho there are some who pretend they are downright Copperheads. There are very few however…Lt. Col. Baird arrived here yesterday and was mustered.
