War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Milton Hills, Va., Nov. 16, 1863, in part: "…we have been under marching orders since yesterday mooring…I understand that the R. R. and the bridge across the river is nearly completed. When that is finished…we shall go on to the Rapidan…whether Meade will attempt to cross or no that is the question…the weather must soon put a stop to operations. Three months pass quick to me now than the first week did at Harpers Ferry…to look back over it now it seems very short and what great events have occurred in that time…when we came out you will recollect it was thought by most people that the war would soon be brought to a close. Some even thought…that the Regts then being raised would never see a battle…most…stand an excellent chance of seeing more. Capt. Lee arrived here last night. He is looking extremely well and feels as well as he looks. From his account there is more soldiers at home than there is in the Regt. Our Co. is as large as any Co. in the Regt and it numbers but 24 enlisted men, non-commissioned officers and privates. We left Geneva with very near a hundred…George S. Youngs…". The original transmittal cover is included. Bit light, else VG.
