War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Milton Hills, Va., Nov. 24, 1863, in part: "…today has been very dark and disagreeable as well as rainy…reveille was sounded this mooring at three…orders were given to march at daylight. It commenced to rain just before the long roll was blown to strike tents. We got all packed up, burring up the writing desk and table we had made…and a number of handy articles which we could not carry, formed a line…and were all ready to march when Col. Bull called "attention" and said the orders to march heave been countermanded, pitch your tents immediately. We didn't break ranks…nor yell any. Oh no, we had just had our tents down long enough to have everything inside the stockades get wet. We were a great better off than the rest of the corps …the 2nd Division had marched a mile before the orders came. The 1st and 2nd Corps had marched some four or five miles before their orders were countermanded. Some think that Gen. Meade has no intention of moving even if it had not rained believing that the papers would not have been allowed to published his intentions…before hand. Yesterday's Chronicle announces that "the army moved at daylight this morning" and altho it would probably cross the Rapidan at Germania Ford…on eating is certain viz., the army has more confidence in Gen. Meade than in any Gen. that has ever led it…George S. Youngs…". The original transmittal cover is included. Bit light, else VG.
