War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Dec. 13, 1863, in part: "…we moved from our camp at Milton's Mill about four miles to an open plain near a small town called Stevensburg. A camp was laid out and calculations made to build stockades. We went to work and got a lot of stone together to build chimneys…and had not had them up an hour before the long roll was sounded…afterwards we were told we might pitch tents again…next morning came but no orders to move of course we did nothing toward stockading…we have now (four of us) got a stockade up five feet high by six in width, ten feet long a good chimney and fire place…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
