War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Dec. 16, 1863, in part: "…Capt. Lee commands our Co. [while] on the march, on dress parade or if we were to have drill…he has nothing to say in regard to the government on regulation of the Co. The Regts is now so small that…it has been temporarily consolidated into four companies. I and G form one which is under command of Capt. [Benjamin F.] Lee [WIA Harpers Ferry 9/15/62 & Gettysburg 7/3/63] but rations are still drawn for ten Cos. and each Co. manages its own affairs…Capt. Lee…is a "gentleman and a scholar", but no soldier . The regt cannot be permanently consolidated as long as there are 600 men on the books…it could not take two hundred men into a fight. Cos. C and G are the two strongest Cos. and draw rations for 29 and 27 men respectively…daed beats and all. Out of 27 in our Co. there is thirteen privates for duty…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor stains, else VG.
