War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Dec. 23, 1863, in part: "…the best Gen. in the Army of the Potomac has been relieved of his command …at least it is reported that Gen. Warren has been relieved by Gen. Hancock who has so far received from his wound received at Gettysburg as to be able to resume command of his old Corps, the 2nd. All are sorry to part with Gen. Warren who had won the confidence of his men not only in his skill and judgement but in his care for their welfare. You say you were considerably disappointed when you first heard that the Army had fallen back to it old position…people generally expect altogether too much. They seem to think that all that is necessary to ensure the capture of Richmond is for the army to move forward, fight a battle with Lee and take possession of the Rebel Capitol. A dozen battles might be fought…and Lee defeated every time and…we would be as far from laking it as ever. I no more believe that Richmond can be taken by the Army of the Potomac…the charge that would almost annihilate a corps is not always the worst thing that is to be encountered. I do not believe there was a man there who would not have preferred to make the charge, rather than lie on the skirmish line that night which…a number of men were frozen to death. I have not yet read the President's message and proclamation. [Dec. 5, 1863 proclamation offering amnesty to returning Confederates] I should like to read that and the new Gospel of peace…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor stains, else VG.
