War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Dec. 27, 1863, in part: "…a member [Corp. Manley T. Stacey] of the 111th [N. Y.] Regt was shot dead yesterday by a sergeant of the same Regt…the sergeant had an old revolver and was snapping the hammer on the tube and after trying it two or three time, as it did not go off, he aimed it at this man's dead and pulled the trigger…when it exploded the ball passed through his right eye, killing him instantly. It is said that [it was] an accident. The exact counterpart of the above occurred last night in the 39th. I have not taken any pains to ascertain the truth of the report however…on Monday eve the 30th Nov. our whole regt was sent out on picket and remained there until about four p. m. of the 31st. We were relieved by a detail from the other Regts in the brigade…that night we retreated the pickets were not to be drawn in until 3…the next morning, but owing to the neglect of the field officer of the day they were not apprised of our retreat and were consequently taken prisoners. This is why no prisoners were reported from our Regt…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor stains, else VG.
