War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Jan. 1, 1864, in part: "…our camp is magnificently…on the top of an exceedingly high hill from whence we can look down upon the canvas cities of the Army of the Potomac…the city of Culpeper can be seen, its bright spires looking still brighter against the dark background of the Blue Ridge whose towering peaks and cliffs are now covered with snow…the smoke of the rebel campfires can be seen curling upward…the stockade I spoke of is our house. It is covered with our tents. We have bunks built in on end running across the tent…S. B. and myself occupy the upper one…our fireplace is a "singer" and unlike some gentlemen never smokes…the names of the boys who removed John Stewart [KIA Bristoe Station, Va., 10/14/63] to the ambulance is Thomas Costello, John Barrens, George Close and Percival Mitchell. Clinton Pasko asked me the same question…he has written to Mrs. Stewart…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor stains, else VG.
