War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Jan. 3, 1864, in part: "…three boys of Co. I, two of them well known in the lower end of town have been sentenced to 30 days hard labor…to be confined for the same number of nights in the brigade guard house and to forfeit one months pay. They were absent without leave from…the 26th Nov. until we got back on the 3rd December and consequently did not participate in the last campaign. The anecdote in the Democrat about the soldier throwing away the turkey reminds me of what Lt. Lincoln's little darkey said after the battle of Gettysburg. The Lt. was the owner of a pack mule which he left in charge of the darkey. When the fight was over he found the dark but no mule…accordingly asked him where the mule was why…"I frowed de mule away." Threw him away? Says the Lt. what did you do that for. Well says he "when them shells begun to come ober I seen bigger boys dan me frow deer mules away and so I frowed mine away." The Lt. thought it was rather a curious way to dispose of a mule…he took his pay in tormenting the darkey about "frowin im away."…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
