War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Feb. 19, 1864, in part: "…you immediately ask parodical question…if all the Johnnys had acted according to this preference what would have become of us…if all the Johnnys had acted accordingly…[?] would have been all right & there would have been no war…I have seldom seen the boys more willing than on the day in question…you have seen…that the 2nd Corps has been detailed for special duty in the spring. What that duty will be…no one…can tell. That it will be both important and severe is certain…the spring campaign will be opened…may [it] be eminently successful I earnestly hope. If the Rebel army gains another great victory…as at Chancellorsville…God only knows how long this cruel war will be protracted but if the armies of the Union are successful there is reason to hope that it may be finished up in a year or two. The 126th…have seen some very rough times…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
