War-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Feb. 26, 1864, in part: "…the rest of the men in the Co. are as bad off as myself and some of them much worse…the sutler has been far too liberal with us and has trusted all to whatever they wished…therefore a great deal more money was spent than there would have been had the boys had the money in their pockets. Some boys ran up a bill of ($45)…mine was…about eighteen…I must have some photographs taken and they are cheap like everything else in the army; only $6 per dozen. Toady I made another foolish purchase…of a picture frame for which I paid $1.50…on the 22nd Washington's Birthday the 3rd Brigade had quite a celebration…a platform was erected in front of the brigade headquarters on which a table and camp stool were placed…it was expected that the Hon. Ogden of Yates County would be present to address the meeting…the train was delayed and he did not arrive until after the meeting had been dismissed. There was a plenty of good music…the 2nd Brig. Band having kindly volunteered their services in conjunction with our…band, besides…the drum Corps of the 111th, 125th and 126th and the bugle corps of the 39th. There was also number of ladies present to grace the occasion with tier smiles…several regiments were drawn up in close order before the speakers stand…after which Gen. Owen made a few introductory remarks…and requested Capt. Haight a. a. a. g. to read some resolutions which the general had drawn up for our approval…they were all eminently loyal and patriotic…it read like this. Resolved, that slavery is a stumbling block to the progress of the nation and inimical to Republican institutions. Another was Resolved, That we have no objection to the Constitution being rewritten and improved to suit the times…we do most earnestly adhere to the sound doctrine of one flag, one nation and one people. Capt. Haight made a few…remarks of no account and called for three times three for the memory of George Washington which was given with a will…some few dissented…but if such was the case they remained silent and refused to accept the opportunity…to express their disapproval…Gen. Owen…not only spoke, he acted and his acting was superb …he enlisted in the Philadelphia City Troop as a private…he was…elected Col…he had the Chickahomiiny fever which affected the bowls…he reiterated many incidents of his…experience and many amusing anecdotes…and kept us in a roar of laughter nearly all the time…[much more detail about Owen's address]…after speaking about an hour, as Mr. Ogden had not arrived, he concluded and dismissed us, all highly pleased with Washington's Birthday…I am sorry to say that Byron K. Feagles has died of his wound…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
