War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Feb. 29, 1864, in part: "…our forces in Florida have been pretty severely handled…through the careless of one man who probably being under the influence of "Commissary" saw more of the enemy than there was…if fifty or a hundred men are killed through the carelessness of one why no one is to blame…it is all for the flag. I could not help laughing at…the word which J. N. B. of the 111th puts in Capt. Seabury's mouth in…the Morton's Ford affair…he says Capt. Seabury of Gen. Ownes staff was the first to gain the opposite side of the river…a rebel picket leveled his piece at him, whereupon, the captain…cried…don't do that…the man first but missed…and the captain…charged…seizing him by the collar…that man was put under guard and marched across the river…how a Rebel should dare to fire…when he had told him he must not do that is incomprehensible…well, well, there is no telling what those rebels will do. I should be…willing to believe they would fire at a Brigadier General…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
