War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Mar. 5, 1864, in part: "…my duty to God and myself is often presented to my mind and yet I am still a sinner and…worse than ever before…I do not know a man in the company who pretends to…like religion…you say that is no excuse…but…you do not, can not know the temptations to which we are daily and hourly subjected…I have that bad habit of postponing and deferring…things union a better opportunity. I know it is dangerous and wicked…I dread and fear death. I know I shall have to meet it face to face in the coming campaign and yet I can only pray if I fall, I may die as a solider. This will be painful to you. It is painful to me, but I can not truthfully write otherwise…a man might as well apply for a major general's commission as for a furlough now…George S. Youngs". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
