War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Mar. 13, 1864, giving a good description of what was arguably the most famous ball to be put on by either side during the war. It was held in especially built one hundred foot long cabin festooned with portraits of Washington, American flags and red, white and blue bunting. Not only was the dance grand and romantic, but it was made poignant by the fact that all those in attendance were aware of the coming campaign's excepted butchery and for most this would be their "last waltz", in part: "…it is reported that Gen. Grant…is now paying a visit to the Army of the Potomac and that it will be reorganized and improved under his supervision. A company of sharpshooters is being organized from each Regt in the Corps. Three men are detailed from each company and a captain, first and second lieutenants from each Regt. It is probable that these sharpshooters will do the most of the skirmishing in the coming campaign. The ball that was held at Corps headquarters on the 22nd passed off to the satisfaction of all concerned…it was intended for the officers and not for privates. The tickets were only ten dollars. There were quite a number of ladies present from Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia [&] New York C…it is now so late I fear I shall not be able to get my photograph taken as they have to be sent to Washington to be finished…I have just heard of some changes and promotions in the Regt…they do not effect our Co…you are not to infer that I rank as high as corporal. I am high private and draw the same pay…enclosed you will find a picture of the hall in which the 2nd Corps dance came off…Geo. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
