War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Mar. 24, 1864, in part: "…there is a report in circulation…that Gen. Hays has been assigned to the command of the defenses of Washington from Chantilly to Union Mills…my duty for the next day was "Fatigue" building corduroy road…after the detail was reported at brigade and division headquarters…while waiting to get axes, picks, and shovels I quietly returned to my quarters and remained there and was never missed or if I was missed it was never reported…George S.
