War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Mar. 29, 1864, in part: "…I was obliged to leave this here as there was orders to get ready for inspection with overcoats rolled on top of knapsacks…then was established a fresh proof of my assertion that grumbling and fault finding was natural…cursing and swearing was added in large qualities…for Col. Frank by whose orders we were called…he is, at present, our brigade commander. In the work of reorganizing the Army of the Potomac the 3rd Division, 2nd Corps has been broken up and Gen. Hays assigned to another command. Our brigade has been transferred to the 1st Division and is now composed of six regiments , two having been added…all are New York Regiments…we have therefore lost both Gen. Hays and Gen. Owens. There are five brigades in the division…I should have no objection to colonelcy, even of a niger Regt…I have often…regretted that I did not attend better to my studies when at school…knowledge of military tactics and regulations is not all that is necessary to procure a commission in those Regts, but the applicant must have a thorough knowledge of mathematics, geography, history and geometry etc…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
