War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Apr. 2, 1864, in part: "…a great many troops have been sent up to the front…lately and the 9th Corps (Burnsides) is said to be at Fairfax Station…when we do move it will be with a much bigger army than we have had since it was led by "Little Mac". A large regiment of heavy artillery was added to the division…they having been sent from somewhere in the vicinity of Washington…the joke of it is that they carry their heavy artillery on their shoulders [brass shoulder scales]. Gen. Grant seems to be sending out all the D. Br. [Damned Brass] that have been living around Washington for the last two. The regiment that came up yesterday is…larger than our brigade. The poor fellows are lying down…in the mud and sleet without any wood near to make a fire…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
