War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Apr. 6, 1864, in part: "…Gen. Hays…would have desired to take his old brigade with him…it was not supposed that he could be allowed to have his choice…but the report proved untrue…as to my looking solemn perhaps if she stood before a camera with the expectation that the reflection was going to break the "Machine" she might look solemn too for of course I should have to pay for it…a captain, a 2nd and 1st Lieut., five sergeants, nine corporals, and ninety privates have been detailed for provost guard at Corps headquarters, all from the 126th Regt. It is regarded as a very big thing heretofore this guard has been made up from the different Regts of the Corps, a man or two from each. We moved over here today…probably no fighting unless we are attacked in the rear…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
