The Crimean War lasted from 1854 to 1856. It was fought between Russia and an alliance of the United Kingdom, France, the Ottoman Empire joined somewhat tardily by Piedmont-Sardinia. The majority of the conflict took place around the Crimean peninsula on the Black Sea. Autograph Letter Signed, “Robt. Jackson” 4p. octavo, January 2, 1855, Lines of Sevastopol, written to family in Ireland, it reads in part: “...We are still in the same place where we encamped on our first march from blaclava...The men come in from the trench frequently wet through andmust then lie down in the tents without dry clothes...I think it is a mere chance any of us shall return if the present state of wretchedness remains unchanged...A great number of our men are suffering from frostbitten limbs. I don’t think any of them can last this campaign two more months. ...There are plenty of wild Russian dogs here and they at times attack single persons. The most difficult part to keep warm here is the feet. I believe there are Jackboots, sheepskin coats, and fur caps for us in blaklava but can not get them as the commissary will not and cannot furnish the means of transport...” About VG. In November of 1854 British supply ships were destroyed in a storm leaving troops to suffer through the Crimean winter. The British did take Sevastopol in August 1855.
