War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Apr. 18, 1864, in part: "…three Cos. of the 50th [New York Engineers] are to go with each of the Corps this summer…my or ours military situation…is…considered to be an enviable position…we got it through the recommendation of Gen. Owen and Hays. We are on guard once in five days and police once…when on the move it is our duty to guard the headquarter wagons and the Gen's. headquarters, to draw up stragglers to the front and in battle to take prisoners to the rear…there is not a soldier in the position that we have been in that would not jump at the chance of being Provost Guard such is patriotism in the army…enclosed I send you a photograph of Gen. Hancock and one of Gen. Warren full-length…"Geo. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
