War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Apr. 25, 1864, in part: "…we took down the Sibly tents and stockades which formed the winter quarters of Gen. Hancock's staff…everything that cannot be carried this summer is being sent to the rear…the corps was reviewed by Gen. Grant on Friday…it is said to have been the finest display ever witnessed in the Army of the Potomac. We were ordered out in front of headquarters and received the Shoulderstrapes when they returned from parade to partake of Gen. Hancock's hospitality. Gens. Grant, Mead, Hancock, Sedgwick, Warren, Sheridan and all the Brigadier Generals of the Corps were present and a great many others whom I do not know by sight. This corps, lately the smallest, is now the largest in the army…George S. Youngs, Provost Guard, 2nd Corps Headquarters…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
