War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written (with great hand drawn red, white and blue rendition of a 2nd Corps Provost Guard Corps Badge) by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., Apr. 28, 1864, in part: "…there is nothing transpiring beyond the usual arrivals of convalescents from the hospitals where they have been…a long time "Beating it" …perhaps I am uncharitable in thus speaking of these men…but there are so many who we know are "playing it" that we are very apt to judge them all harshly. A large number of men have been sent from here to Baltimore…having been transferred to the Navy. Ten men were sent with them as guards…Captain Bassett has been to Baltimore three times…with these sailors…Dead Beats…they are a class of men who employ all conceivable and inconceivable means to get out of duty and keep out of danger…Geo. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
