War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Stevensburg, Va., May 1, 1864, in part: "…the 5th Corps which has been guarding the R. R. from Alexandria to Brandy Station has been or is being relieved by Burnsides Niggers in order that it may participate in the coming campaign. Gen. Grant is looking up every available man in and around Washington as you may see by the orders which has been issued from the War department requiring every enlisted man on detached duty in that city to report to their regiments…this will send a great many D. Bs to the front. The ammunition and supply have been moved up nearer to the extreme front, also several batteries and everything seems ready for the move but I suppose Grant will let us know when he really is ready…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
