War-date Union soldier's Grant Overland Campaign letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Headquarters, 2nd Corps, Virginia, May 16, 1864", in part: "…I thought I would write a few lines and let you know that "I still live."…we crossed the river on the fourth…there has not been much fighting now for the past two or three days…we have given the Rebels a pretty good whipping. They have fallen back…and both sides are engaged in burying the dead and caring for the wounded. Our position in a battle is close in the rear of the line of battle to prevent stragglers from running to the rear and…to drive them up to the fight…we are in range of bullets…the shells drop around us very carelessly…there are some indications of our remaining here today and…after I get my gun cleaned I may commence a more lengthy letter. Col. Baird has got to the Regt. He came yesterday. There is a good deal of talk about his trying to get us back to the Regt. He is around here a good deal. The Regt has lost about eighty men killed, wounded and missing. Co. G's loss is killed C. Benedict, wounded S. Hughes, H. Caton, J. Southard, J. Rector, J. Barren, J. Hollenback. I have not time to give any particulars…all the letters to the army come through safely…your aft. son, G. S. Y." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
