War-date Union soldier's Grant Overland Campaign letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Headquarters 2nd Corps near Cold Harbor, Va., June 12, 1864", in part: "…the troops have been digging all the time. We now have three or four lines of works and are still fortifying. Another great move will be made within the next 48 hours. Probably a change of base from the York to the James river…I made a visit to the 148th expecting to find three or four friends…the first man I saw…was George Beadles…looks rough and rugged…John Craig …does not look very well. F[rancis M.] Day and a number of others whom you would not know…Ithiel [Hause] was killed a week ago Friday [June 3rd] while charging across an open field. We have been laying within a mile or two of the 148th for over a week. I only learned this three days ago. This is a sad blow for Uncle and Aunt…they have at least the consolation of knowing that he deed doing his duty. [Corp.] George B. [Beedles] is now color guard…G. S. Youngs." A bit light, else VG
