War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "near Bull Run, Va., Dec. 14, 1862", in part: "…last Thursday night the Capt. made a reconnoissance five miles beyond Manassas with 25 men from each regiment in the brigade…which D'Utassy is commanding but found oohing but an old darkey who said there were no rebels this side of Culpeper…Friday morning the reveille was sounded…we were ordered to pack knapsacks…and be ready to march in an hour…marched ten miles to Fairfax Station over the very worst roads I ever traveled. We were marched at quick time all the way…Major Phillips said he knew that it was a…hard march but the next…we would be apt to throw away our love letters and ambrotypes…I have one or two that I should keep if we had to march…we took our guns and marched back again by the railroad…I thought in the morning we were going to have a fight…two boys from Waterloo thought there was going to be some caps snapped and reported themselves sick when they were as able to go as any…you know one of them but I will not mention names…we met Gen. Sigel and his Corps on his way to Richmond…our captain [John F. Aikens] is universally liked both by the boys in our own Co. and others…several boys in Co. I have expressed a wish that they were in our Co. I wonder what the Rev. Mr. Gildely thinks of the Benjamenites and the Gideonites now both of the Lieutenants [are] home and half of the Co. deserted. Three months ago today the shells were flying round us at Harpers Ferry…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
