War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "2nd Corps Headquarters in the field near Petersburg, Va., July 4, 1864", in part: "…all has remained quiet in front of our corps which has not fired a shot in over a week. On the right three has been more or less fringe every day and night. From one o'clock on the morning of the first until after daylight a very heavy cannonade was kept up and at times there was considerable musketry. The Bells of Petersburg were rung and the sky was lit up by a larges fire…whether the bells were rung on account of the fire or to call the citizens to arms I have not been able to ascertain…the daily Herald…contains a very accurate map of the situation of the Corps on the 22nd. The situation has not been materially changed since then. General Hancock is now at Jones House. The guard lays a few yards to the right…the Jerusalem plank road is nearly on a parallel line with the lines of battle at this place while farther to the right the line of battle crosses the lank road. It is at that point that an almost constant skirmish has been kept up and cannonading and skirmishing occurs there frequently…most of the fighting since the 22nd has been still farther to the right in front of the 9th and 18th Corps. There is not an hour…that the booming of cannon may not be heard…I have learned since I came in service…when I was at home…I should have been…happy…I was always longing to go anywhere…to get away from Waterloo. Now it is just the reverse…G. S. Y." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
