War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "2nd Corps Headquarters in the field near Petersburg, Va., July 9, 1864", in part: "…an occasional exchange of compliments by artillery and sharpshooters has taken place…yesterday about four o'clock when a very lively cannonade suddenly commenced in front of the 9th Corps and rapidly extended to the left as far as the plank road…the firing…was occasioned by an attempt on the part of the Rebels to take one of our batteries. They drove in the pickets but were quickly repulsed and driven back by a strong skirmish line which was immediately sent out. Several shells were exploded a few rods from Headquarters, but excited no attention beyond a passing remark…[at the] Jones House General Hancock sat on the portico, whip in hand, his horse at the gate ready to mount in case the difficulty should extend to this corps…a battery from the reserve artillery was brought up and got in position few yards to our right and almost in our rear…Platt Blaisdell was wounded and at the hospital …the impulse to laugh on reading Mrs. B's. idea of being taken prisoner was irresistible. If she had rather have her son was shot dead than to hear he was a prisoner. I am sure that he…would much rather undergo the latter operation. It wont do to believe all the exaggerated accounts…in the papers of the Rebel treatment of their prisoners. I have no doubt…the majority…are treated as well as it is possible than to beat them…I enclose two or three little scraps of paper picked up at Chandler's House…[a Confederate pass, August 1863 Confederate soldier's letter, 1808 letter addressed to "Mr. Thomas F. Chandler…Hanover County, Virginia", 1818 letter by a certain Thomas Price, 1820 letter addressed to "brother Rufus" Chandler and a misspent letter by Rufus' son Erastus H. Chandler on whose plantation Youngs found all these items.)…George S. Youngs." All, but the CSA soldier's letter and pass are included, including the original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG. (6 pieces). Announcement: Please see the CSA Letter section for the above mentioned pass and letter.)
