War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo. and 2pp. 12mo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Headquarters 2nd Corps in the field near Petersburg, Va., July 21, 1864", in part: "…five hundred Rebels came into General Warren's Headquarters at one time…there has been rather more considerable cannonading and sharpshooting for a day or two…sharpshooting is kept up night and day and I hardly think two consecutive hours has passed…in which there has been no artillery firing. An attack has been anticipated for a few days…the most extensive works are in process of construction and the troops are working night and day in order to complete them as soon as possible. Several large forts are nearly completed and roads are being dug from one to another. These roads are dug so deep that a wagon may pass along without being observed. No idea can be formed of the immense amount of labor which has been expended on these fortifications…how is the draft in Waterloo. I suppose there are very few persons in that delightful little villages that are in love with it, but it [is] very favorably regarded here…now let the dead beats shake in their boots. What a pity it would be if some of those young men who have been married recently should have to go…it would be rather bad if Ben Smith should be grafted into the army, but if he is big enough to be married. He is big enough to go for a solider. There are several persons there that I…would be highly gratified to see at this time. I hope they will all "come in out of the draft."…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
