War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Headquarters 2nd Corps in the field near Petersburg, Va., Aug. 5, 1864", in part: "…the boys amuse themselves by making forts of sugar and after they are crowded with flies blow them up with powder. The slaughter is immense…there has been some artillery firing in front of the left wing of the 5th Corps…the Rebel cavalry are moving rounding that direction…the division has…received order to march carrying nothing but haversacks and canteens…[Aug. 6]…we are still in our old camp, the first division being the only portion of the Corps which moved last night…they returned and are now in their old quarters. It is said the Rebs exploded a mine under one of our forts on the right. The fort had previously been evacuated by our forces, consequently no great damage was done. An attack was expected…hence the 1st Division was sent there…very little firing today…George S. Youngs, Provost Guard, 2nd Corps Hdqrs." VG
