Lot of 2 business letters written to James Ames, partner in the famed military goods firm that was a major contractor to the government through most of the 19th century. Autograph Letter Signed "Jos. Smith", one page, quarto, January 12, 1858, Washington, D.C. to James Ames, Chicopee, Massachusetts. This Navy Department letter reads as follows: "As I learn you are about to depart for Europe under orders from the War Department, I have to request that in your examinations at different stations, you will obtain all the information you can as to the latest improvements in Screw Piles and Pile Drivers, & any other machinery which, with your knowledge of the wants of the Navy Yard, you may deem valuable." With cover, VF condition...Plus; Autograph Letter Signed "G.K. Dallas", one page, quarto, February 10, 1858, Legation of the United States, London, England to James Ames, Fenton's Hotel, London. The letter reads :"I received this morning from the Foreign office the answer (of which I enclose a copy) to my application on your behalf to be allowed access "to Her Majesty's Arsenals, Dock Yards, and Gun Factories, with a view to note existing improvements." Crisp, clean and Very Fine condition.
