War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., (plus a partly-printed Adams Express Company receipt, printed at City Point, Va., sending fifty dollars home) written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Hd. Qrs., 2nd Corps in the field near Petersburg, Va., Sept. 3, 1864", in part: "…the Weldon R. R. is being thoroughly fortified and today the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Division is engaged in fortifying near here. An attack on the 5th Corps was anticipated and every preparation had to made to meet it successively on Thursday evening, but no attack was made and the night passed off as quiet as usual. There has been much less firing than usual for the last two days…S. E. Blaisdell may have been converted since he joined the army, but if such is the case I have heard nothing of it. His morals however are excellent. I never in…over two years heard him use any by word…I was very much disappointed…that you had not yet received the money…I enclose the receipt given by the express Co. Father will know what to do with it…the money was taken down by Capt. Bassett to the office which was onboard a tug anchored in the river. He took money for several of the boys and returned the receipts to us…two of the boys say that their money has been received all right…George S. Youngs."
