War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Head Quarters, 2nd Corps near Petersburg, Va., Oct. 9, 1864", in part: "…I broke a resolution I formed at the beginning of the year and took to smoking again…there has been some very hard fighting here recently…the fighting has been on the extreme right and left of the line. The first Division of our Corps held the works from the Appomattox on the right to the Jerusalem plank road. The second and third Division were in support of the 5th and the 9th Corps on the left. Headquarters were not moved tho' we were packed up for a week, ready to move at any moment…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
