War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Head Quarters, 2nd Corps near Petersburg, Va., Oct. 14, 1864", in part: "…we are prepared now and like the Confederate States all we ask is to be let alone. All is quiet along the lines at present, but it is generally believed that great battle will be fought before the first of November. Politics run quite high at times and the discussions are some times very loud if not insensible. The great majority of the boys are in favor of Lincoln and Johnson and consequently the McClellanites have to suffer considerably. I expect to send home a vote myself and…shall send it to father. It must not be opened until the election…and in then…in the presence of the inspector of elections…refugees and deserters continue to come in every…night. All sick of the Rebellion as everybody is of the war. We are treated to a display of fireworks about two evenings in a week which greatly surpass anything I ever saw at theNorth. The Regt. is in the front line of works and are much better satisfied than they have been before the season…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG
